This is a Generator. These generators produced current when water dropped through the penstocks driving the turbines which in turn powered the generators. In 1895 these units were reported to be the largest three-phase dynamos ever constructed. Each stands 8 feet, 8 1/2 inches and weighs 57,877 pounds. Their combined capacity is 3,000 kilowatts. This picture was taken after P G & E took over the operations. The generators have been restored to what they looked like in 1895 (see Tour).
